Breaking Bad Competition brief

Those walking past Hand & Lock's Atelier this week have been lucky enough to see me sitting in the window. Not as a new art installation piece but to create an illustration drawn directly onto the glass for Hand & Lock's first capsule collection. After receiving a commendation for my entry and baboon illustration. Hand & Lock offered me the challenge of decorating their 2.25m x 1.75m window using chalk pens.
The illustration is based on the brief of their capsule collection, inspired by human and animal hierarchies and the endless power struggles featuring riot imagery like guns and grenades with wildlife motifs.
I completed the window in 2 days, admittedly not so gracefully at times but getting encouraging thumbs up from van drivers every so often meant that I knew I was doing a great job...
More pictures to follow, once the collection is put in the window. If you're in the Oxford St area over the next few weeks, have a look.
Maison et Objet, Paris 2014
I was lucky enough to have the chance to visit Maison et Objet trade show in Paris today, as part of my internship.
Featuring eight halls full of textiles, homewares, ceramics, gifts, interiors etc . The scale of the place and stands is impressive and sometimes overwhelming.
But here are a few photos of products and installations that stood out to me:
This installation by Nendo was part of the trend section focusing around the theme of Words.
Nendo explores the multiple words for rain in Japanese and captures the varying stages of rain from sleet to drizzle in beautiful and elegant glass vessels.
Here are a collection of colourful and fun lanterns and lamps from the 'Ethnic chic' Hall.
Cactus on the bright yellow Monocle coffee stand.
These beautiful La lampe gras made by DCW. Objects create an incredible and dynamic environment. The pipe like forms seem to grow from the ceiling like vines and create an almost 50's office vibe.
Anyway, enough for today.
Bonne nuit
My newest pen and ink illustration commission of a dog called Dougal, this one took quite a while because of the detail...
Hope you like! Next few posts will hopefully have some new lino prints (if I find time between working part time and interning)
Recently I entered a competition on Talenthouse to illustrate The Pierces, although I didn't win, I'm really happy with the result of my illustration. I wanted to share the level of detail and development within my drawings.
It was also my first experiment using a graphics tablet and it made me realise I really need one!
I accept commissions and sell prints of my illustrations, for more information,

I have also been doing a few more illustrations and prints so keep an eye out.
Northumbrian coastline
One of the positive aspects of being an intern means that you can have time off at short notice. So I decided to venture back home to Northumberland for just over a week, enduring a 15 hour coach trip.
The weather took a drastic turn from summer sun to almost winter-like conditions. It did mean rain and wind but it was going to stop me visiting some of the country's best beaches.
The time of year means that the plants and foliage are incredibly vibrant and contrast amazingly with the dull and grey weather which resulted in some lovely photos.
Time to go back to London and a completely different landscape.
Hand & Lock Design Competition
Embroidery and Illustration
I love embroidery and I love drawing. So I've combined the two, to create an illustration featuring embroidery I saw whilst interning at Hand & Lock and embroidery from Clover Canyon's A/W 14 RTW collection.
I Really loved the use of chunky silk shaded embroidery on net; perfectly balancing delicate materials with bright and bold prints.
At Hand and Lock I was very fortunate to be in very close contact with some incredible embroidery samples, some of which take hours to complete. Which you can see an example of, in this time lapse video of the creation of Gold Work embroidery for Mary Katrantzou. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzXuY6Y6COE
Embroidery is very diverse, you can create some incredible pieces from it, I'd recommend trying a course by Mastered https://www.mastered.com/schools/3. Where you can try Tambour beading, Goldwork,Creative embroidery and learn about the business of embroidery.
Go and get your embroidery on!
London Fashion Week A/W 2014, Mary Katrantzou illustration
Whilst I was interning at Hand & Lock, I was lucky enough to see the company work with some amazing designers. One of them being Mary Katrantzou.
The Autumn/Winter 2014 collection is based around the idea of symbolism and features intricate laces, appliques and embroideries. Each piece is incredibly detailed and I was lucky enough to be part of the sampling process for some of the embroideries.

The collection is so beautiful and I wanted show the details through illustration.
Illustration
I was recently commissioned to create an original illustration for a christmas card featuring a French Bulldog.
I decided to have a bit of fun with this one...
I decided on a cute french bull dog and because it's christmas and there is a massive christmas jumper trend at the minute I decided the little guy shouldn't be left out! So he's got his own designer jumper too.
So, Using my usual intricate style of small mark making with fineliner I started to shade him in, using small dots and lines close together to create the variations of texture and shade.
Once I had completed the mark making, I felt he needed a little more depth and tonal contrast. So using a bit of ink and water I shaded in the areas of shadow, particularly the forehead and legs, Next stage.... Colour.
A little bit of subtle colour on his jumper and he's finished! What do you think?

Shanghai Fashion Week
Over 2 months ago my tutor from DMU emailed to tell me that my collection had been selected to be displayed at Shanghai Fashion Week. Needless to say I was excited and grateful.
It was strange to think that my collection, that I worked on for so long and put everything into, was going to be half way across the world and displayed to a completely different culture.
My final collection, as I am sure many other Fashion Design Students will agree, is a very personal thing. Details, colour, cuts and fabric choices have all been informed by our culture, childhood and experiences. And each stitch, embroidery, bead and macrame knot has a moment and memory attached, whether good or bad (often difficult). My first outfit has a jacket with a macrame section, which (for my own sanity) I never worked out how long it took. I can still look at the Jacket and recall what I was watching or listening to at the time (embarrassingly, a lot of it was the complete series of Sabrina The teenage witch).
On October 22nd, I received a tweet from my friend with a link to the images from the Shanghai Catwalk [http://www.shanghaifashionweek.com/event_detail.asp?id=334]
I was so happy and proud to see my work in China! It's slightly surreal aswell, because I was still in rainy Northumberland, working and it is so strange to think that when I get my collection back, it has travelled further than I have.
But, I can claim that I've been to China, right?
